Culturally Competent Mentoring

Terza’s identity as an African immigrant woman, fluent in multiple languages (Portuguese, Cabo Verdean Crioulo, Spanish, and English as well as basic understanding of French), naturalized United States citizen, wife, mother as well as professional experience with immigration law allows her the inimitable ability to provide culturally competent advising to her university’s growing diverse student body comprised of continuing education and first generation college students, as well as international and (undocumented) immigrant students from Latin America, Caribbean and African continent. Because of her own experiences and background, Dr. Lima-Neves has served as a formal and informal mentor and advisor to many students, offering them support beyond the academic world. She also works with faculty and university administrators to better serve the diverse student population.
